It’s been oh, so long since I’ve had a good squeeze.
Lord send me a man, not too bald or too hairy
Please don’t make him look like Shemp, or Moe, or Larry.
Lord
send me a man, he needn’t be wealthy
Just
gorgeous, and smart, and funny, and healthy.
Lord
send me a man, and make him so sweet
That
he’ll kiss me all over, from nose tip to feet.
I
want someone who’ll bring me my breakfast in bed
Just
don’t make him so old that he’ll be nearly dead
I want him to be not too tall, short, or fat.
Unselfish and kind, but not a doormat.
A great lover who’ll make love to me all up and down
With a great sense of humor, just don’t send a clown.

Although I’m quite desperate, I don’t want an
ex-con.
I want him to love me and call me his queen
Please make sure he’s a man, and not an in-between.
I want him to know he’s to be only mine
So I won’t have to send him back posted—declined!
I want someone who’ll know when I’m blue, when
I’m sad
And, also to know when I want to be bad.
I’m not asking for much Lord, so please understand

 Mujer
de Miel is a poem that I wrote for Menudo: The Play. In the
play, the main character, Nicolas, tries to woo his wife,
Mona, after a huge misunderstanding where she thinks she has
caught him en fragante with their Salvadoran neighbor, Doña
Juana. Although it was all quite innocent, Mona is heartbroken.
Nicolas’s apologies, only serve to make Mona more angry
and suspicious, especially since every time he tries to mend
things, he only makes it worse by committing even more bumbling
offenses. Of course, the nosy neighbor enjoys her flirtations
with Nicolas and could care less if he ever makes up with
Mona, whom she considers a cold fish who doesn’t appreciate
her husband like a good wife should. Aurora, Mona’s
childhood nanny (a repatriate) is now the Garcia familys cigar-smoking,
wrestling-loving, Mexican housekeeper. She has advised Nicolas
to write a romantic love poem for Mona, a good way for him
to do penance for his supposed sins, and find his way back
into his wife’s good graces.
It
was challenging to write a poem from a man’s point
of view, but I was pleased with the results, as apparently
were many others. After the play, I often heard it recited
to a loved one. I have had many requests to translate it
into English. Unfortunately, as is the case with prose and
humor, the essence is lost in the translation. I would prefer
to have someone familiar with the Spanish language read
it to you, and give you their interpretation.
